Saltmarsh Soap Co. Review: Four Ingredients, Zero Shortcuts

Handmade soap bars tied with twine on a wooden table

We used one bar for six weeks of hand washing, showers and shaving to see whether the simplest soap on the shelf holds up.

Most soap labels make you work for the truth. Saltmarsh Soap Co. puts the whole recipe on the front of the box: olive oil, coconut oil, lye and water. That is the entire bar.

What we tested

Two of us used the unscented bar and the lavender bar for six weeks. We kept them on a draining dish and weighed them every Sunday to see how fast they wore down.

  • Lather: rich and creamy, even in hard water
  • Feel: no tight, squeaky skin after washing
  • Wear: lost about a sixth of its weight per week

The people behind it

The bars are cured for eight weeks in a converted boathouse. The owners name both of their oil suppliers on their site, which is rare in this category.

“If we would not put it on our own kids, it does not go in the pot.”

Should you buy it?

If you want one soap for hands, body and shaving, yes. Order three or more bars at a time so shipping makes sense. For more simple swaps, see our clean home starter list.
